Hello, Miscellaneous Geekout, and a Suggestion
Hi all! Delighted to join the party and share the buzz.
My comic collecting days began in ’88 and mostly fizzled out by mid 90s. Batman was my thing as a teen until pre-Vertigo and Vertigo became my jam in early 90s. Never really got into Marvel or Image, but flirted around independents as writing was getting pretty bad over in superhero verses at the time. (Bad by those standards–looks like Shakespeare in these woke times, I’m sure.)
I’ve lugged those boxes around many a move over the decades. Never imagined I’d be picking up new reads as a middle-aged man, but here we are!

It’s hard to find brevity for my admiration of Eric. No one who cares about mythology, pulp fiction, or its importance to any culture can deny the good of the cause he’s championed, at obvious sacrifice to himself. For now it’s sufficient to say I’m just proud to contribute a little bit to it, and proud to associate with others who do. Good on all y’all!
Imagine my delight that Rippaverse also happens to be a quality production! I’m not really the target audience, I’m sure, but even if it isn’t the heady stuff of the 80s British Invasion, it’s something more important to the times: Americana with that spirit of discovery like 60s Marvel. Not the pedantic moralizing of the DC superscene where demigods are a class to themselves extolling the Dharma. No, the Marvel universe came out with humans in the crucible being tested, and the universe discovering in real time what morality was going to define the age one unruly grudge match at a time.
In the Rippaverse we know Texas is its own polis…”Four Corners” is another…the mystery of what divided the Indivisible is tantalizing. But this is no Martha Washington tour of Distopian America. I feel hope in these comics, some unabashedly shining cities gleaming, looking towards the future, like the ’39 Worlds Fair. One ticket, please!

May I suggest an editorial direction that keeps dramatic beats in an old-fashioned 24 page pace? On several of these books, the ease with which one page leads into the next makes me realize at times I’ve overextended my read and have stopped soaking up the story and artistry like I should. Some clear-cut chapter breaks would help an old timer like me digest these big books. I don’t expect economics to afford us 24 page releases again, and I’m grateful & hopeful that the Rippaverse solution will keep comic books coming like they should: to be held in our hands! But there’s something magical about that 24-page ‘act,’ at the end of which we get to pause, ponder, appreciate, and savor…before rolling onto the next. I don’t discount the expense of pages and ink to introduce these ‘speedbumps,’ but I suspect the reading experience might benefit from it enough to make it worth it.

Long live the Rippaverse! I’ll be proud to pass these along to the kiddo one day, and tell her the story of Rippaverse’s place in American comics.
