Daily Poll 1698: Are We Better Off Without Monoculture?
The monoculture has existed for as long as mass media has. Since everyone used to read the same newspapers and magazines, listen to the same radio stations and watch the same TV channels. The culture was monolithic if something became popular it was known throughout the entire population. The internet ended this trend about a decade ago and now there are endless niches that each have their own axes of popularity. In the end it’s probably for the better but it does create issues of maintaining societal cohesion although that would exist regardless of the fact that we aren’t watching MTV anymore.
