Daily Poll 1032: What Do You Think of Calligraphy?
Calligraphy comes from the ancient Greek word <i style=”font-style: italic;”>kalligraphía which means beautiful writing. It is the practice of depicting letters in an artistic way to establish a unique visual style. Every writing system in modern times practices calligraphy. Ink is used most in modern calligraphy but any writing instrument can be a tool for calligraphy. The writing system in China and Japan lend themselves well to calligraphy as does Arabic. Arabic calligraphy is also part of Islamic ritual as calligraphy is used to depict Muhammad, and other leaders. The practice of Arabic calligraphy was considered so sacred that Arabic was forbidden to be printed with movable type printing presses until the 19th century. I appreciate the artfrom that is calligraphy but it’s not the school of art that I am interested in learning. When it comes to writing the content of the letters is more important to me than their style. What do you think? Don’t forget to vote on the poll and to comment below!
