Daily Poll 1016: What Do You Think of Marcus Aurelius?
Around 27 BC Octavian makes the Roman Republic into the Roman Empire and ascends into the role of Augustus Caeser. His legacy built a period of peace know as Pax Romana and it’s agreed as having ended with the death of Marcus Aurelius in 180 AD. Marcus’ legacy comes not from his statesmanship or his participation in the Macromannic wars fought along the Danube; It’s his legacy as a philosopher. Marcus was a stoic philosopher and he was known as such during his life. His philosophy is known to us from the work Meditations which is a collection of his personal writing which give great insight into the philosophy of the greatest in the Roman Empire during its peak. Aurelius was more concerned with making useful statements on ethics and metaphysics rather than getting caught up in theoreticals.
